Modern house with wooden and stone exterior, set on a snowy landscape under a partly cloudy sky.

Hudson Valley House

This large family residence overlooking the Hudson River valley is comprised of three gabled volumes, which are organized around the approach sequence and the gradual unveiling of the sweeping views beyond. Inspired by the local vernacular and built with traditional heavy timber post-and-beam construction, the house is nestled into the hillside with extensive stacked stone terracing, referencing the foundations of local historic barns. The house is clad entirely with un-treated white cedar, which is intended to naturally weather over time.

When walking the site at the start of the project, we came upon a neighboring property with a cluster of aging barns. We were attracted to their distinct, pure gabled forms, with minimal window openings and naturally weathered materials, resting upon stacked stone foundations.

These barns became a significant inspiration during the design process. We used a similar approach to break down the scale of house to create a composition of simple forms, utilizing natural building materials.

The house is divided into three main volumes: a large two-story living/family building with kids rooms upstairs; a primary suite; and a garage. These gabled volumes are arranged dynamically in relationship to each other, and sit atop a stone plinth which contains additional bedrooms and service spaces. The two-story volume is stepped down from the others in order to reduce the visual impact of its height.

The interiors of the house are designed with natural and warm materials to help root the house in its location. Solid un-stained woods, natural terracottas, patinated metals, and soft paint hues all interact to create a deep and meaningful connection between the house and its place in the Hudson Valley.
